For students aged between 15 and 18.

Interactive and hands-on Masterclasses provide young people with an insight into the moving-image industry. A rare opportunity to learn from experts about film production and animation while getting a taste of film education at a tertiary level. Each class includes theoretical and practical components.

THE CAMERA

A hands-on overview of camera operation, addressing technical and artistic elements of cinematography as students experiment with cameras. Shot decisions and terminology will also be discussed.

SOUND PRODUCTION

Sound in film is an integral part of storytelling. Production circumstances and associated issues will be addressed as students learn how to operate microphones and recording equipment in order to capture quality audio.

LIGHTING FOR CAMERA

An interactive workshop in which various genres and styles of lighting for camera will be outlined, along with tips and tricks for creating good cinematic lighting. Health and safety and practical considerations for setting up the shoot will also be explored.

EDITING

Creating form, shape, and rhythm in film through editing is the focus of this workshop. Students will look at timing, story arc, continuity, effects, titling, and transitions as they use Final Cut Pro software to put the cinematic jigsaw together.

ANIMATION $50

Using various stopmotion, undercamera, and digital techniques, this full-day, hands on workshop covers model-making, lighting, image capture, digital transfer, and simple editing skills. Students will work on a short collaborative exercise.

GAMES DESIGN $30

Master Chief is the primary character in Halo. But how was he developed? This workshop looks at the creative aspects of preproduction in context to character development. Students will look at common themes and styles of characters that help tie the story, gameplay, and mood into a seamless product.

LIVE FROM THE STUDIO

Presented by JMC Academy / $30 PER CLASS

Led by experienced live television Director, Bruce Wuth, this workshop will teach participants the equipment, roles, and operations of a small multi-camera television studio, as they record a real live band on air in a studio. Participants will learn how to speak the language of television crew professionals, and direct crew and talent from a control room.
