About Us

TransLink Cine Sparks provides young people with greater access to quality cinema and opportunities to develop their media and visual literacy. Over 18,000 people have enjoyed the festival of film since its inception in 2005. TransLink Cine Sparks transforms the cinema experience into something interactive and engaging, connecting young minds and educators through the power of the moving image.

The TransLink Cine Sparks programme is designed to give Australian young people from age 6 to 18, a window into the lives of people in other countries and cultures. Film selection is undertaken by Anne Démy-Geroe and Derek Weeks from internationally acclaimed festivals around the world. Anne Démy-Geroe is the Executive Director of the St.George Bank Brisbane International Film Festival, and has overseen the festival from its beginning. Derek Weeks is currently the Head of Department for The Arts at Indooroopilly State High School, and President of the Australian Teachers of Media Queensland.

TransLink Cine Sparks offers a range of MasterClass workshops for older students at Griffith University. The TransLink Cine Sparks Film Juries Competition challenges students throughout Queensland to review a specially selected film. Successful entrants will become members of a Film Jury.

Teachers are able to access educational materials designed to encourage literacy, critical reasoning, and creative expression and to extend the cinema experience into the classroom.

In 2010, the TransLink Cine Sparks Team is again looking forward to presenting an exciting and engaging programme of films and moving-image education.
